Former 7-Eleven director sportif Mike Neel was once asked by a journalist about the science of cycling.  His response:

 

"It's not a science, it's war."

This one insight has propelled me into a different rider. Racing is war in a very literal sense and I visualize and verbalize it that way. I wouldn't die in war without giving absolutely everything, and this understanding makes the suffering a little less and the will to push further stronger, both in training and racing. I think this alone is the difference between fighting at the front and shivering at the back; it IS the killer instinct and propels less-gifted riders ahead of the timid. We're all going to die, so I'd rather go out fighting. Thanks Coach
